Small Lot is named after the surplus lots owned by the Detroit Land Bank Authority which do not meet the minimum single-family residential lot size. Small Lot proposes a single-family home, intended to be built in phases as a young professionals’ life evolves through programmatic need. The first phase: a structural shell that provides the foundation, walls, and roof and outlines the buildable site. Each subsequent phase is associated with a module that responds to spatial requirements. The shell reflects inexpensive building techniques to emphasize the interior spatial qualities. The polycarbonate walls allow light to permeate through the shell.
