Addressing the deeply embedded, segregated history of the site, the Clarksdale Creative Commons builds upon ongoing initiatives to reoccupy exclusionary spaces. Working closely with the non-profit Delta Commons and the Clarksdale community, we have imagined a youth design center and space for all. The proposal can be understood in three parts: Reoccupy, Recreate, and Celebrate. Reoccupy presents strategies to maintain a building in opposition to its history. Recreate engages the entirety of the site by forming spaces of crossover and connection. Celebrate highlights and commemorates spaces of Black progress, excellence, and joy.
