“The Sandwich Factory”

The average American is far removed from the production of their food. The food industry has prescribed to us what objects we call food, and we often overlook the large industrial processes that have had to occur in order to transform objects into the food we consume. The sandwich factory, sited in Chicago, Illinois, seeks to localize and archive all of the processes it takes to create a seemingly simple meal, the ham sandwich. This factory is divided into four spaces, each housing on a small scale all of the operations it takes to create four ingredients in a sandwich: bread, ham, cheese, mustard.
