STUDIO THEME

“Land of Possibilities II: Architecture of Spatial Diplomacy”

The seismic upheaval in political ideologies and democratic structures have weakened institutions, providing an opportunity to reconsider the role of the host and guest in the spatial practices of diplomacy. The Land of Possibilities studio takes a critical approach to the FBO (Federal Buildings Office) program of embassy in a global climate emergency. Located on the international date line of the Pacific Ocean, hovering above data-filled undersea cables and below Starlink Satellites, this speculative ground provides a launching point for imagining a world of collective exchange defined by architecture. Both speculative and concrete the studio framework provides the space to imagine an architecture of collective responses to global crises. Architectural elements, scale, and cultural spatial practices are tools to launch design proposals on new ground. How do we define culturally specific adjacencies and thresholds of engagement on this land? What are new rites or rituals defined by architecture necessary for diplomatic engagement? What are the codes of production and formality by which we construct safe and responsible spatial boundaries of engagement? As an introduction to Embassy, each student reconstructed embassy to scale, designing the representation to communicate the spatial intention of the architects. The final project, LOP II: Architecture of Spatial Diplomacy, presented in video, with a supporting image presentation of the storyboard and design process unpacking the spatial narrative of these UnReal and Real worldbuilding projects.

Precedent Models

Embassies: Precedent Models Students launched the semester with a focused study of the spatial intentions of precedent embassies by utilizing various craft and model-making techniques. The objective was to gain a comprehensive understanding of how material tectonics and spatial narratives intertwine. Once constructed, the models were documented using photogrammetry and scanning methods, utilizing the hand scanner. The intention was to create a relationship between the physical and digital, by exploring the spatial qualities of the physical model and its digital counterpart. These efforts aimed to offer a deeper insight into the complex interplay between architecture, materials, and the digital world.

Final Project: Unreal + Real Short Films

The Land of Possibility is located along the international date line. Olohega focuses on building a local network system on a deserted island without damaging the ecosystem. Terra Commutatae is about designing a built environment that mediates the interactions between host and guest among marine life in the North Pacific. Land of Youth proposes an artificial atoll that offers a better environment for families affected by landfill and waste trade. Muffling, Echoing, Softening emphasizes that the architecture should conform to the land's rituals, flora, and fauna's desires. Lastly, The Frontier proposes a system that helps vulnerable islanders on Tarawa Island manage climate risks proactively and preserve their cultures.
